Transmission


The transmission is a Chevrolet 4 speed manual out of a Chevy C60. When I got it it had a parking brake on it which is the big drum in the back along with a PTO (Power Take-Off) gearbox attached to the right side of it.


To start I knew I didn't have any use for the PTO and didn't want the extra weight and space it took up so that was the first thing to come off. I then made a custom cover to keep the oil from running out, making it custom was just a way to save a couple bucks rather than having to order one.


I also removed the big parking brake drum and all of it's linkage and brackets to reduce the rotating weight which wastes a significant amount of power as I have no use for that style of parking brake.


The finger's on the clutch I am using were very work, some all the way through, so I replaced them with pieces from another old clutch I had lying around.


After all the unneeded parts were removed the cleaning stage began. The transmission was steam/pressure washed.


Using a wire brush on a grinder the remaining paint, grease, and grime was removed from the engine in preparation for paint.


The output shaft and shifter were then covered up and 3 coats of Rustoleum Automobile Primer were applied to the tranny in 10 minute intervals to prevent runs and drips.


Then 3 more coats of Smoke Gray Krylon paint were sprayed onto the transmission in the same fashion.




Rear End

I got the rear end out of a 1980 Chevy pickup, it's functional but will need a good tune up and it has a hole in the differential cover so that will need to be patched as well.


I found some old wheels and 34" tires lying around and put them on the rear end, they don't have much tread left but will do for taking measurements and testing.



Front End

The front end I recently purchased off Portland Craigslist for $50 came out of a Chevy Blazer. It has disc brakes and is a 10 bolt differential but since I am not going to make this tube buggy 4 wheel drive I am planning on cutting the differential out and welding a straight pipe across where the differential used to be.
